Why Notifications Are So Hard to Ignore

A QUESTION WORTH TESTING

What happens when attention gets interrupted?

First, learners spend two minutes on a quiet task. Then they try a similar task while someone interrupts them. They record what happened and compare the rounds. Their own observations are a starting point for questions, not a promise that everyone will get the same result.

The study then takes them beyond their own experiment: how do researchers investigate notifications, and what can a particular finding actually tell us?

TRY IT YOURSELF

Quiet first. Then interrupted.

A simple letter-finding task gives kids something concrete to measure and describe. The second round asks a helper to interrupt four to six times while they work. A pencil, a timer, and a willing helper are all you need.

EVIDENCE LAB

Ask what the research supports.

Can a notification distract someone who never picks up the phone? Learners examine a research summary, consider its limits, and practice separating an observation from a bigger claim.

DESIGN DETECTIVE

Notice what asks for your attention.

Kids look at curiosity, urgency, reward, and social pressure in everyday notification scenarios. Then they audit their own alerts and choose what to see right away, check later, or silence.
